Name
it was one of the endless hot summer days
I rode my bike uphill back home from the office
red fire hydrants sprayed sprinkles of water
onto glistening black asphalt road
I stopped by a grocery shop run by immigrants
that had no AC on and smelled
spices, meat, and exotic vegetables
when I stood by cashier to pay
the elderly man bagging my grocery
stared at me with sun-baked wrinkled face
and slowly called out my name
at first, I couldn’t understand him.
he pointed at my name tag hung around my neck
and from consonant to vowels
slowly read my name
and stared into my eye
perhaps this was a rite of passage
or a reckoning of a soul
from another
who knows the price of life.

I could not get the words out
I tried biting the tongue
I tried bitting the finger
but the words would not come out.
the longing to feel
the desire to be wanted
dissipated like a small fire
tucked in the darker corner of the room.
still, it will ignite again,
and I will do it again.

when the angels arrive
and you are asked the question:
“what do you regret”
let us smile and say:
“none too many”
thus, let us ask ourselves today:
“am I loving?”
“am I honest to myself?”
“have I given my best?”
for we pass through our days
like burning coals on a stack of calendars
let us hold on to the rein tight,
and draw picture we want to draw.
it will be a one good ride.

we run everyday to our fullest speed
for a sliver of chance we will meet.
like a pair of comets colliding
in the middle of the vast universe
when we shine to our best effort
perhaps we can meet again.

when I love,
I am ready to pay the price.
if I must,
I will withstand pummeling criticisms,
hold out a hunger,
and be a shield from judging eyes.
if I can,
I will stay as long as I can
until the pain resolves away.

speak the truth and hold onto them

do I need to belong
so that I don’t stand alone
or does the world come along
as I walk through the storm?
lightening and thundering give me headaches
but through it all, the walk is alright.
it’s one none had walked
yet, i am not sure why,
I feel I am at home

I am glad I was happy for a moment today.
the air was soft and sweet.
the sun graceful and reminiscent.
light and shadow mingled into brushed yeux-orange.
it was a good break for my soul.
I am grateful for this peaceful pause.

Cats
a cat in desperate flight is one none can catch
it will claw its way,
tearing apart the shower curtains,
flapping its arms about
heading towards who knows where
blinded by its own instinct
it’s covered in dust and goo
forcing the human to put it back to the tub
to wash off the dirts.
it repeats again and again
hearting both the human and the cat
until one tires out
or the shower is done.
